Take a moment, right now, to really look at your fingernails. What are your nails telling you? Their appearance and condition can provide vital clues to the state of your health, and even indicate life-threatening problems with your heart, lungs and liver, among many other disorders. Dermatologists and other medical professionals as well as nail-care specialists can spot these often subtle indicators, but it never hurts to check yourself.
Nail color is one major indicator. If your nails appear pale, for example, you may be anemic, undernourished, or even have congestive heart failure. Very white nails with darker rims can indicate a liver disease such as hepatitis. Bluish nails, on the other hand, can be a sign of cyanosis—oxygen deprivation—and reveal a lung problem such as emphysema. Fungal infections often turn nails yellow, and can destroy their structure.
Nails are composed largely of keratin, a hardened protein that is also present in your skin and hair. Their relative strength and structure can warn you of various conditions. The onset of arthritis or psoriasis, for example, may produce pits or ripples. If your nails are brittle, dry and cracked or split, thyroid disease may be the problem. Melanoma, a virulent form of skin cancer, can show up as dark lines beneath the nails. A physician should check out any unusual coloring or marking such as this immediately.
Don’t forget your toenails, either. Toenails are usually overlooked as health indicators since they’re usually covered up, or just ignored unless one of them is ingrown or overly sharp (especially by guys). Fungal infections such as tinea and staph are the usual issue here—and can cause serious damage on their own—but thickened toenails can also reveal circulation problems and arthritis.
