FAQ

What does this HIV home test kit measure?

This test kit is to check and screen for a Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection, which causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). It measures HIV antibodies that are generated in the body from an HIV infection.

How soon should I take an HIV test after possible exposure?

The antibodies are not generated for a while after an infection. This means you cannot rule out the possibility of an infection even with a negative test result. Please wait until 2 months after possible exposure to take this test. If the result is negative but you are still concerned, please take the test again two months later.

When can HIV antibodies be detected after infection?

Antibodies can be detected 2 – 3 months after infection in many cases. However, in rare cases they may not be detected until after 6 months.

What do I do if the test result was positive?

Further examination at a specialized medical institution is necessary as the possibility of HIV infection cannot be denied.

What do I do if the test result was negative?

It usually takes 2-3 months after infection before detection is possible. It can take up to six months. If you are concerned, please test yourself again after two months and/or consult with a medical professional.

Should I get tested again?

If your test result was positive: Please make an appointment with a qualified medical facility for consultation and further testing.

If your test result was negative: If you have any concerns, please test yourself again 2-3 months later. The reason for this is that an HIV infection may not be detected the first 2-6 months after exposure. It is also recommended that you take an HIV test once a year or more often, if you are at risk of exposure to HIV.

What is a false positive test result for HIV antibodies?

Occasionally an HIV test result may indicate the presence of HIV antibodies (positive result) when in fact you are not infected with HIV. The probability of a false positive test result is said to be 3/1000. If you have a positive test result please visit a competent medical institution for a consultation and retesting.

Is there any treatment for HIV?

There is no wonder drug yet. However, by combining several medicines the development of AIDS may be prevented or slowed over a long period of time allowing patients to live normal daily lives.

Why do I have to write my details on the outside of the envelope if it’s anonymous?

This is only in case the kit doesn’t get delivered to the lab. It is a safety precaution so your test can return to you.
