Matcha Honey Butter – a decadent spread free from trans fats, hydrogenated oils and refined sugars

If you’ve tried my matcha sauce recipe then you’ll love this matcha honey butter! I’m always thinking about healthy condiments and spreads for baked goods because the store bought varieties are completely overloaded with refined sugar, hydrogenated fats and other additives. In my opinion, nothing beats butter and honey on toast or freshly baked bread for both simplicity and flavor. The slight saltiness of the butter and the hint of sweetness from the honey are both naturally enhanced by the matcha.

Produced by bees, honey is considered a nutritive sweetener as it provides some health benefits compared to refined sugar. The sweetness in honey is due to the combination of monosaccharides fructose, glucose, maltose and sucrose. Since ancient times, honey has been used as a burn salve and praised for its wound healing properties. Honey is known to provide relief from coughs and a sore throat. The antibacterial qualities of honey are an effective relief from many minor skin conditions. Honey contains trace amounts of many vitamins and minerals. Antioxidants and bioactive plant compounds are also present in honey, darker honey being richer in these qualities. Honey is considered a healthier option when it comes to sweeteners as it lowers LDL (bad cholesterol) and reduces inflammation. Honey does increase blood sugar levels due to its sugar content but not to the same extent as refined sugar. Although honey is not dangerous and does not spoil, it should not be given to infants under the age of one as they do not yet have a properly developed immune system.

I prefer to use salted butter in this recipe as it brings out the sweetness of the honey and the complex flavors of the matcha, however it is a personal preference, so if you prefer this matcha honey butter as a completely sweet condiment then by all means, use unsalted butter.

This matcha honey butter isn’t limited to breakfast foods or sweet baked goods though because it pairs nicely with a wide variety of foods. Spread it on muffins, toss it into roasted vegetables or even use it to flavor seafood. Get creative in the kitchen!

Yield: ¼ cup


4 tbsp butter, softened (salted or unsalted)
1 tbsp honey
