In our search for the ever-elusive healthy organic hamburger in Japan, one of our members told us about a rare find.
So we headed over to Bareburger in Jiyugaoka to sample what is billed as “the organic hamburger in Japan”. With the many burger shops that have sprung up in Tokyo, we really wanted to see what all the fuss is about.
Well there are burgers and then there are Bareburgers! These guys have painstakingly put together a pantry of all natural and organic ingredients that can be combined into an endless number of healthy hamburgers.
You can choose from their array of special organic hamburgers or build your own. You have a choice of organic beef, turkey, grilled chicken, fried chicken, tofu and mixed beans or tsukune (ground chicken) for your patty. Choose your cheeses (all natural of course), your veggies, bun and sauce.
Lots of delicious looking side items, including sweet potato fries and salads. We didn’t manage to order the milkshakes, but the table next-door did and they look like the real deal. Bareburger may also be one of the only, if not the only hamburger shop in Tokyo, that offers Brooklyn brine pickles (three kinds!) straight from New York.
Oh yeah, these guys started in New York as the first organic burger shop in the city and now we have the pleasure to sample their healthy hamburgers here in Tokyo.
We opted for the “Be My Burger” plan which is a BYOB (Build Your Own Burger) affair. Both of us were impressed. Juicy beef, fresh veggies, organic mayo from New York and the homemade bun were all outstanding.
The shop is housed in a bright, airy friendly atmosphere with a pop New York flair.
Burgers start at 1,080 yen for the simplest thing on the menu and go up to about 1,600 yen for some of the combo burgers.
Rumor has it that plans for a second shop in Ginza are already underway. Stay tuned for even more organic hamburgers in Japan as these guys will certainly gain in popularity.
