There is certainly no shortage of good Indian restaurants in Japan, but only a select few can boast the authenticity, history and integrity, as well as success of Nataraj. The Indian Vegetarian Restaurant in Ogikubo prides itself not only on the flavour of their food, but also the quality of their food and the staff that prepares it. “Natural is Healthy” has been their motto since opening their first shop in Japan in 1989; twenty six years later, they are still providing some of the best, healthiest Indian cuisine in the country.
Nataraj owns three farms, one in Chiba, Yamanashi, and Nagano prefectures, where they produce organic vegetables such as onions, lettuce, tomatoes, and the like. The beans and spices that they use come directly from India. Even their cooking oil, which is GMO free, is carefully considered. The natural yeast bread Nataraj makes for their naan requires two days to be ready, unlike other restaurants that rely on instant yeast.
Nataraj opened its first shop in Takadanobaba back in 1989. Within ten years, however, they’d outgrown their fifteen-seat small space, as their menu selection and customer based increased. Needing to expand the size of their store, they made the decision to relocate to Ogikubo. Their reputation and fans only continued to increase, and so a second store in Aoyama opened in 2000, and a third store in Ginza in 2002.
Chief Chef Sadananda, from the original Takadanobaba store, is still in the kitchen creating the wonderful “home cooking” that Nataraj is renowned for. Their menu (available in English) varies from store to store; all are chock-full of vegetarian wonders to delight all your senses. Most offer several curry sets, including one for children, as well as snacks, desserts, and even a special “no onion, no garlic” menu for those who prefer.
