What is UMF?
Unique Manuka Factor is the registered trademark of the UMF Honey Association and can only be designated by licensed operators that meet guidelines published by the Ministry for Primary Industries to assure purity and quality.
The UMF rating indicates the antibacterial strength of the Manuka Honey. It does so by measuring the concentration of specific chemicals such as MGO (methylglyoxal), which has been shown to inhibit some E.coli and S.aureus strains. A high content of leptosperin also indicates the honey’s purity as it is a chemical only found in honey from the manuka plant (leptospermum scoparium), native to New Zealand.
