About the product
Rape blossoms, called nanohana in Japanese, resemble small, yellowish-green broccolis and can be used in a variety of dishes including stir-fry, soup, and tempura. Many people associate rape blossoms with springtime, and in spring months in Japan many fields turn a brilliant yellow with rape blossom flowers.
Our rape blossoms are cut 5 cm from the tip, so that each piece has a soft texture. To prevent damage to the buds, the rape blossoms have been rolled up and frozen. Because they are frozen separately, you are able to take out just the portion you need without defrosting the whole package at once.
Sugarlady’s produce is harvested in season and then frozen immediately in order to ensure the highest possible nutritional value and best flavor, and remains vibrant and undamaged when frozen for long periods. Even if our rape blossoms remain frozen for months, once defrosted they will still have their bright hues. Rape blossoms are rich in vitamins and also contain iron.
How to prepare
Without defrosting, take the rape blossoms from their bag and boil briefly in slightly salted water. Then place in cold water and dry off before use. Rape blossoms can be used in stir-fry, soup, tempura, pasta, or as a garnish. When using in soup or stir-fry, add as the dish is nearing completion. The rape blossoms will thaw to perfection with no need to worry about overcooking. Rape blossoms can also be eaten as ohitashi, a traditional Japanese dish comprised of rape blossoms (or other vegetables) soaked in sauce.
