Restaurant Highlights

Hemp clothing shop Juzu in Ebisu is a unique trend-setting store that specializes in environmentally-friendly hemp-made products. The store is actually an expansion of owner-and-operator Kiyoshi Hashimoto’s original Gowest store, which opened in 1989 and still exists just across the street.

The Gowest store featured work, army, vintage, and outdoor wear. As Mr. Hashimoto’s inventory of and interest in hemp-made clothing grew, however, he started a line of apparel under the moniker and brand “Gohemp” and eventually opened Juzu to focus on the sale and public education of products containing and made from hemp.

Hemp is considered one of the most durable natural fibers. It is an extremely eco-friendly crop, needing neither pesticides nor great amounts of water to grow. Hemp is strong, weather resistant, as well as UV and mold resistant and very cost effective to farm because of its minimal growth requirements.

Kiyoshi Hashimoto believes that in addition to caring about what one eats (his wife, Kiyomi Hashimoto, owns and runs Healthy Partner Marugo Deli next door), one should also appreciate and pay attention to what one wears. Parents, he says, should educate their children with this philosophy, so that the next generation can and will grow up being healthy and environmentally conscious in all aspects of their lives.

Juzu, which in Japanese means “Buddhist prayer beads” or “Buddhist rosary” has an outstanding selection of hemp-made items on offer and for every member of the family. From children’s clothes, men’s wear, jeans, and shoes to women’s dresses, bags, and purses – all of this and so much more can be purchased there. And not only apparel, Juzu also sells miscellaneous goods and accessories such as lighters, earrings, keyrings, and necklaces – they also exhibit hand-made goods by local artists and designers.

Hemp clothing shop Juzu in Ebisu, located just a stone’s throw from the station, is open seven days a week from noon until 20:00.
