Dr. Kakuko had dreamed of becoming a doctor since she was in high school. As a teen, she played tennis and handball, and at that time unfortunately suffered from a sports injury to her ankle. It was this experience that prompted her to make sports medicine her specialty in medical school. She acquired her medical license in 1992 from Yokohama City University, School of Medicine. Upon graduating, she began her MD and PhD training in Orthopedics, to become an orthopedic surgeon. Dr. Kakuko continued her training and surgery for more than 10 years and became an expert in her field.
With her unique background and skill she began working for the chief doctor of the orthopedic department of a general hospital and simultaneously was chosen to become the team doctor for the Japanese national Speed Skating team. She has traveled with the team to Norway, the Netherlands, Canada, the US and other countries. After that she became the offshore doctor of the Japan Delegation for the Olympics Committee and has been working at the Japan Institute of Sports Science (JISS) since 2009.
