About the product

Kabocha pumpkin, also called kabocha squash, is a variety of squash very popular in Japanese cooking. It can be used in a variety of dishes including in stews, salads, and croquettes. These kabocha pumpkins are of the Kent variety, and are soft, flaky, and very sweet. The pumpkins were frozen swiftly after blanching, and so can be easily enjoyed after thawing with either your stove or microwave. Kabocha pumpkin is rich in vitamin A and also contains vitamin C.

Sugarlady’s produce is harvested in season and then frozen immediately in order to ensure the highest possible nutritional value and best flavor, and because our produce is blanched before freezing, it remains vibrant and undamaged when frozen for long periods. Even if our kabocha pumpkin remains frozen for months, once defrosted it will still have its hearty orange color.

How to prepare

To make fukumeni (a type of Japanese stew) using kabocha pumpkin, add broth and seasonings (such as sugar, mirin, salt, and soy sauce) to your fukumeni pot or pan and heat. When it begins to boil, add the still-frozen Kuri kabocha pumpkin, skin-side down. Arrange the pumpkin pieces so that they are not overlapping. Put on the drop-lid and stew on medium heat for about 3 minutes. Then, lower the heat and stew for another 7 to 8 minutes. To use the pumpkin in salads, soups, or candy, arrange still-frozen pumpkin pieces on a plate so that they are not overlapping, cover the plate with plastic wrap and microwave approximately as follows: In a 500W microwave, heat 250g for 4 minutes. In a 600W microwave, heat 250g for 3 minutes 30 seconds.The pumpkin, plate, and plastic wrap will become very hot after microwaving. Please use caution to avoid burns. Cooking times provided are for reference; actual cooking times may vary depending on the model and size of microwave as well as on the number of pieces of pumpkin being cooked.
