About the product
This variety is called “komai,” or saffron cod fished in Hokkaido. Cod are described as “under-ice swarming fish,” only caught in the dead of winter in the northernmost prefecture of Japan.
Saffron cods are a part of the cod family, found from the North Pacific to the Gulf of Alaska. Cod is an easy source of essential minerals, macronutrients and vitamins, including vitamin B12, selenium, phosphorus and protein. Vitamin B12 in particular is vital to the human body’s red blood cell formation, neurological health and DNA synthesis. It is known to help prevent heart disease and age-related cognitive decline.
The combined selenium and B12 found in cod have also been linked to the reduction of risks associated with the development of colon cancer, through protecting the colon cells from damages that were caused by toxic substances detected in certain foods and cancer-causing chemicals. Selenium helps form DNA and acts as an antioxidant, limiting cell damages from compounds of free radicals.
