About the product

This Ebisu-variety kabocha pumpkin from Hokkaido has been strained, and so has an extremely smooth texture. It comes conveniently formed into 30g coins and frozen separately, so you can take out just the quantity you need without defrosting the whole package. Kabocha pumpkin, also called kabocha squash, is a variety of squash very popular in Japanese cooking. It contains beta-carotene as well as vitamin A.

Soft and somewhat sweet, kabocha pumpkin is a great choice for children who are picky eaters, and makes a healthy alternative to white potato in foods like croquettes. Since this pumpkin has been strained, it can even be used as baby food!

Sugarlady’s produce is harvested in season and then frozen immediately in order to ensure the highest possible nutritional value and best flavor, and because our produce is blanched before freezing, it remains vibrant and undamaged when frozen for long periods. Even if our kabocha pumpkin remains frozen for months, once defrosted it will still have its hearty orange color.

How to prepare

To use in salads or as baby food, place the kabocha pumpkin coins frozen in a deep bowl, cover the top of the bowl with plastic wrap, and microwave. In a 500W or 600W microwave, heat one coin for 50 seconds, and three coins for 2 minutes 30 seconds. The coins can be added frozen to soups, and will thaw to perfection as the soup cooks.Always heat the pumpkin coins before serving. Because the pumpkin contains starch, if not heated it will become watery and not taste as sweet.
