How to prepare
Thaw in the refrigerator. The most common way to eat natto in Japan is adding some Dashi (bonito broth, soy sauce, sake, mirin), chopped green onions and raw egg, mixing them up and pouring them over a hot bowl of rice. It is often used as an ingredient for a roll sushi as Natto maki. Other uses include miso soup, tempura, fried rice, omelette, and others.Because of the distinct smell and the slimy texture, some people may need some time getting used to it.In Japan, people in the Kanto area (Tokyo and vicinity) have traditionally consumed natto. In the Kansai area (Osaka, Kyoto, Nara), natto was not a usual part of the diet; however, it is now widely available and more common throughout Japan.
